Yesterday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued marketing granted orders for Juul Labs' JUUL2 System, a decision that allows the sale of tobacco- and menthol-flavored pods. The FDA's assessment concluded that the JUUL2 System is "appropriate for the protection of the public health," based on a comprehensive review of nonclinical, clinical, and population science data submitted by Juul Labs in 2023.
According to the FDA's findings, a significant portion of adult smokers completely switched from combustible cigarettes to the authorized JUUL2 products, with menthol-flavored pods showing a higher rate of complete switching compared to tobacco-flavored alternatives. The agency determined that the benefits to adult smokers outweigh the risks, including potential youth appeal.
Juul Labs Chairman and CEO K.C. Crosthwaite stated that the authorization is a step towards eliminating cigarettes and highlighted the company's commitment to responsible development. He also indicated plans for further FDA filings, including 5% nicotine concentration products and a broader portfolio of flavors aimed at adult nicotine consumers. The company asserts that over two million adult Americans have already switched from cigarettes using its first-generation products.
The JUUL2 System, developed by Juul Labs' U.S.-based engineers and scientists, is designed to offer an appealing, smokefree alternative for adults. Key features include enhanced vapor delivery, advanced thermal technology for precise temperature control, and a PodID chip to ensure vapor performance and prevent unauthorized use. Juul Labs also noted that the JUUL2 System has been available in international markets, and its pods are assembled and filled in U.S. manufacturing facilities.
