Bahrain has announced it will not attend Iran's proposed meeting in Muscat concerning maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision highlights ongoing regional tensions and Bahrain's reluctance to engage with Iran before diplomatic relations are restored. The Kingdom cited security concerns and a policy of appeasement as reasons for its abstention.

Bahrain's Foreign Ministry stated on Saturday, September 12, 2026, that the Kingdom will not participate in Iran's proposed meeting in Muscat aimed at discussing the security of the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry's statement indicated that Bahrain's decision was made "in light of what has been circulated." Bahrain also noted that regional security and stability cannot be achieved through appeasement and called for the Strait to remain open without discrimination or fees.
Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016, a move that mirrored Saudi Arabia's decision during a previous crisis. While Saudi Arabia restored relations in 2023, Bahrain has yet to follow suit. The Bahraini Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to dialogue but emphasized it would not join any collective meeting that includes Iran until diplomatic ties are re-established.
Iran's Foreign Ministry, however, characterized the proposed meeting as a sign of its "good intention" towards neighboring countries, suggesting it is an opportunity for regional nations to guarantee security without foreign intervention. Iran stated that delegations would be briefed on consultations between Iran and Oman regarding safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
