By Irina Slav - Aug 31, 2026, 4:00 PM CDT The Hormuz disruption has added an estimated $330 billion to global energy import bills, exposing the vulnerability of relying on a single Persian Gulf export chokepoint. Gulf producers are accelerating alternative oil routes, including expanded pipelines through Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Syria and Turkey to bypass Hormuz. Pipelines and ports are becoming strategic priorities across the Middle East, with projects potentially reshaping the region’s energy-security landscape long after the current war ends. The severe disruption of oil and gas flows out of the Persian Gulf resulting from the war between the U.S. and Israel and Iran, has saddled energy-importing nations with soaring bills, supply uncertainty, and a murky outlook.

oil pipeline infrastructure
Fighting in the Middle East has blocked a major oil shipping route, costing the world billions of extra dollars for energy. To fix this, countries are building new oil pipelines and ports, which creates a big financial opportunity for energy and engineering companies.
What changed
Middle East conflict disrupts the Strait of Hormuz, forcing billions in new investments for alternative oil pipelines and export ports.
Who wins / who loses
Pipeline operators, engineering firms, and non-Gulf energy producers benefit, while countries and consumers stuck with high energy import bills lose.
Time horizon
Think in terms of the next few months.
