Pentagon Inspector Confirms Iran War Causes US Munitions Shortfalls

A report from the Pentagon's inspector general has validated concerns over U.S. munitions shortfalls amid ongoing conflict with Iran. The independent watchdog's findings directly challenge claims of ample reserves, indicating that strategic inventory levels have been depleted. The U.S. spent over $22 billion on munitions between February and June alone, with total expenditures reaching $33.4 billion for the period according to the report. Equipment losses have also been substantial, totaling $3.7 billion. These expenditures and losses have led to what the report terms "industrial base bottlenecks" for resupply, prompting the Department of Defense to focus on streamlining procurement and production to meet future demands. A separate estimate from the Congressional Budget Office places the total cost of the war higher at $38 billion, encompassing expended munitions, lost equipment, increased operational hours, and fuel costs.
