Saudi Civil Defence announced on Saturday, September 13, 2026, that two people were injured and a mosque sustained damage from a projectile launched by Yemeni Houthi rebels into the Kingdom's southern Jazan region. The attack also damaged several vehicles in the al-Tuwal governorate.
Civil defence officials labeled the targeting of civilian structures a "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law." The Houthis, however, claimed the projectile was aimed at a Saudi military base in Sharurah, located in the Najran province. Saudi Civil Defence later stated that the threat had passed in the Khamis Mushait governorate after an earlier warning was issued to residents.
This incident follows a series of recent missile and drone strikes by the Iran-backed Houthis on southern Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the group targeted civilian and economic sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, resulting in injuries to 73 people, including women and children. These strikes mark a significant escalation in Yemen's conflict, which resumed in July after approximately four years of relative calm under a UN-brokered truce.
The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session this month, during which Special Envoy Hans Grundberg cautioned that Yemen is entering a “new and more dangerous phase of war.” The International Organization for Migration and local officials report that over 500 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced amid the renewed fighting.
