Government forces in Yemen have recaptured the al-Khazan and al-Makahna hills in the Jabal Habashi district, west of Taiz city, according to a statement issued on Friday. This development occurs amidst continuing heavy clashes with Houthi rebels that have been ongoing for two days in the western Taiz and southern Hodeidah governorates along the Red Sea coast.

Houthi forces launched a broad offensive along coastal front lines on Thursday. Sources indicate that over 100 fighters have been killed from both sides since the offensive began. The fighting has also impacted civilians, with a ballistic missile attack in the coastal city of al-Makha resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, according to state-run Saba TV. An AFP casualty toll indicates that over 120 people have been killed in Yemen since the Houthi advance began.

Government military sources reported that reinforcements have been deployed to counter the Houthi advances in western Taiz. The Houthi offensive appears aimed at gaining territory towards the Red Sea port city of al-Makha and controlling hills overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb strait.

What changed

Yemeni government forces and Houthi rebels engaged in heavy clashes and missile attacks near key Red Sea coastal corridors.

Who wins / who loses

Major defense contractors and security providers may benefit from heightened security concerns, while global shipping and logistics firms face potential route disruptions and higher costs.

Confidence & best fit

low confidence · Long-term investor

Low confidence → prefer ETFs and “Watch,” not rushing into one stock.

Quick glossary: Watch = track, don’t buy yet · Build slowly = only if it fits your plan · Protect = reduce risk · ETF = a basket of stocks (often safer than one company)
Safer theme exposure (ETFs)

Baskets that own the theme without betting on one company.

  • $ITA This fund holds a basket of many different defense companies, making it safer than buying just one.
