Ford Motor Company ($F+WL) is introducing the Fathom, an electric pickup priced at $28,350, a move designed to sidestep the high costs and lower-than-expected sales experienced with the F-150 Lightning. The new vehicle, built on Ford's Universal Electric Vehicle platform, aims to leverage development expenses across future models. The strategy follows the success of the smaller, affordable Maverick pickup and aims to secure Ford's electric future.
Earlier this year, Ford reported second-quarter adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of $2.5 billion, up from $2.1 billion in the prior year period. Margins expanded to 5.2% from 4.3%, and management reiterated full-year adjusted EBIT guidance between $10 billion and $11 billion. The company anticipates projected free cash flow of $6 billion to $7 billion will comfortably cover its $0.60 annual dividend.
However, the F-150 Lightning's trajectory, which saw prices climb significantly after its initial launch and sales fall short of targets, serves as a cautionary tale. The elimination of federal EV tax credits and the widening price gap between electric and traditional vehicles present ongoing challenges. Ford's Model e division is projected to incur a $4 billion loss this year, partly due to investments in the new platform. Doug Field, a key figure in the autonomy development, has departed, and the company has restructured its EV operations.
