US Treasury Expands Iran Sanctions to Aviation Sector

Given the expanding sanctions regime and ongoing geopolitical tensions, investors should monitor potential impacts on global trade flows and related sectors.

Based on reporting from aljazeera-english.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced expanded sanctions against Iran's aviation sector on September 1. The move, part of "Operation Economic Outcast," targets 36 commercial and private airlines and aims to increase economic pressure on Tehran by risking exclusion from the global financial system.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced Tuesday 36 new Iran-related sanctions targeting commercial and private airlines as part of "Operation Economic Outcast," aiming to escalate economic pressure on Tehran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the sanctions target companies supporting Mahan Air and warned that any entities doing business with Iran's remaining airlines risk being cut off from the global financial system.

Mahan Air has been under U.S. sanctions since at least 2011. The current administration has intensified pressure on Iran, with Bessent likening the sanctions campaign to "economic D-Day." The sanctions come amid ongoing conflict, with the U.S. striking Iranian tankers as recently as Tuesday, while Iran has continued attacks on U.S. military forces in Jordan.
